CafePress Storeowner FAQ >

About CafePress

What does CafePress do?

Simply put, CafePress lets you sell products such as t-shirts, sweaters, mugs, caps and more, each customized with your own images, basically for free. They don't charge you anything, and you can even make a profit from it.

How much does it cost to sell things at CafePress?

It's free. They set a base price per product, and you can charge anywhere at or above that amount. Anything you make above that base price is profit you get to keep.

For example, let's say you want to sell a t-shirt with your logo on it. The base price for that t-shirt is $13.99. So let's say you decide to sell it for $18.99. That means you'd get $5 in profit for each t-shirt sold. (You can also choose to sell products at the base price, in which case your products would be cheaper, but you wouldn't make any money off them.)

How much technical knowledge will I need to run a store at CafePress?

The plain answer is, hardly any. If you can operate your browser, you can set up a store and start selling items at Cafepress.com.

For those with more technical knowledge, Cafepress offers more options for creativity in your store design:

  • If you can type and follow directions, you can customize your store to include a description of your design, web site, whatever. You can also link back to your main web site.
  • If you know some HTML, you can customize the store even further with images, tables, backgrounds, links to other stores, whatever... anything goes except FORM tags!
  • If you really know HTML, you can host a totally custom store on your own servers.
  • And if you're a real web wizard, you can even build or set up your own shopping cart system to handle everything except the final check out!

How does CafePress make money?

The "base price" for each product is set high enough to cover the cost of production, plus any referrals through the referral program, plus a healthy profit for Cafepress. Since the base price is the minimum price, they will always make a profit on each item sold. (Matthew from The ARMAC Store)

How can I contact CafePress customer service? How about technical support?

You can email them via this handy online form, and they'll try to get back to you within 24 hours.

You can also call them on weekdays from 7am-5pm Pacific Time, toll free at 1-877-809-1659. (Outside the U.S., call 1-510-877-1579.)

Finally, you can mail them: CafePress.com, Customer Service Department, 1933 Davis Street, Suite 204, San Leandro, CA 94577.

How long has CafePress been around?

CafePress was started in August 1999. In web years that makes them old. :)

How did CafePress get its name?

I'm just guessing, but CafePress' first two items appear to have been the small and large mug. That leads me to believe that they really did start as a print-your-own-mug site -- which would explain the name: CafePress. (I imagine the idea to add shirts, hats and sweaters was an inevitable no-brainer.)

Is CafePress a privately owned company, or have they IPO'd?

CafePress is a privately-held, venture-backed company. That means you can't buy stock in them, but you can buy them (if you're very wealthy).

Where is CafePress located (in the real world)?

Cafepress.com
26010 Eden Landing Rd Ste 5
Hayward, CA 94545
USA
